The army described these maneuvers as a test of combat readiness.
“The units will train in a variety of tasks, including the organization of comprehensive support for tactical maneuvers,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
“There will also be combat shooting exercises using all types of aviation, missile divisions and ship groups from the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Fleet,” the ministry said in a statement.
The destroyers and bombers will also be trained to carry out air strikes “against targets as far as possible,” Russian news agencies were quoted as saying.
The exercises take place in the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula, which was occupied and annexed by Moscow in 2014, as well as in the Rostov and Krasnodar regions of Russia. It is not known how long the training will last.
