Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a law on the termination of treaties concluded within the framework of the Council of Europe with respect to the Russian Federation – the Russian Federation has not been a member of this international organization since March 2022.
As reported by “European truth“, the corresponding document was published on the official portal of legal information in Russia.
The law drafted by Putin submitted to the Russian Parliament in January 2023recognizes 21 international treaties as invalid in relation to Russia from March 16, 2022.
Among them are the Charter of the Council of Europe, the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the European Convention for the Prevention of Terrorism, the European Charter of Local Self-Government, the Social Charter.
Recall that in March 2022 the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe decided to expel the Russian Federation, and also called for Ukraine to be provided with means to protect the airspace. Before that, Russia, realizing that it could not avoid exclusion, filed an application with Strasbourg for an independent withdrawal.
The European Court of Human Rights decided to suspend consideration of all complaints against the Russian Federation, but later resumed them. In June, the Russian Federation itself decided not to comply with the decisions of the ECHR made after March 15, 2022.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe stated that Russia, in accordance with international law still have to comply decisions of the ECtHR taken against her.
