Russia has created a drug that protects against memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease

Pre-clinical work on a new drug based on a piperazine compound has been completed at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

A key factor is strengthening neural connections in the human brain.

Due to the destruction of neural connections in Alzheimer’s disease, a person loses memory. A new drug can slow down this process.

The path to creating a cure was not easy. The active substance could not enter the brain. Then scientists began to experiment with his companies. One of them showed the desired result.

“The substance can affect the synaptic plasticity of the brain, that is, improve connections between neurons,” explained a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration at the Polytechnic University of St. Petersburg Elena, Doctor of Biological Sciences Popugaeva.

According to her, how report “Izvestia”, neurons have channels through which calcium ions pass, which are necessary to maintain connections. The new drug triggers a cascade of reactions in cells, thereby increasing the production of molecules that maintain the stability of bonds.

Currently, studies have been conducted on mice. They showed that even short-term use of the drug gives a positive result. Experiments also helped to understand that piperezine is not toxic and does not cause mutations.

As OBOZ.INFO said, Cancer vaccine trials begin in Russia.
