Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree for granting Russian citizenship to foreigners who signed a contract with the Russian armed forces during the war against Ukraine, as well as to members of their families, reports “Ukrainska Pravda”.
“To establish that foreign citizens can apply for Russian citizenship who have signed a contract for military service in the armed forces of Russia or in military formations during the special military operation (as the Russians call the war in Ukraine – b .r.)”, the document says.
The contract must be concluded for a minimum period of one year.
Putin allowed foreigners to serve in the Russian armed forces
The upper age limit for concluding a first contract is also removed
Family members of foreigners who have signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense will also be entitled to Russian citizenship. This includes spouses, children and parents.
The decree is said to take effect on the day of its publication.
The Russian newspaper “Novaya Gazeta” recalls that Putin has already signed a similar decree in September 2022.
The difference between the two decrees is the time for considering the application. In the previous version, the deadline was three months, while in the new version it is only one.
Also, the old version of the document stated that the applicant must have served in the Ministry of Defense for at least six months. The new version does not contain this clause.
The new document supersedes the previous one.
