Russia gives its pavilion to Bolivia at the Venice Biennale

Roma. Russia decided to leave Bolivia its rightful pavilion at the 2024 Venice Art Biennale, also known as the Venice International Art Exhibition, the Italian newspaper reported this Friday. The Art Journal.

Russia will not participate in the Venice Biennale for the second consecutive year, so its pavilion can be occupied free of charge by artists from Bolivia and other South American countries.

“The participation of the Plurinational State of Bolivia in the 60th Venice Biennale, with a group of artists from South America, is thanks to the will of Russia which, at a time when the Russian-Ukrainian conflict fills the news pages, decided give them their pavilion,” the media published.

The curator of the pavilion will be the new Minister of Cultures, Decolonization and Depatriarchalization of Bolivia, Esperanza Guevara, and the commissioner will be Vice Minister Juan Carlos Cordero Nina.

The Bolivian exhibition will be titled an Aymara aphorism “Qhip Nayra Uñtasis Sarnaqapxañani” which means “Looking at the past to walk through the present and the future” or “Looking at the past, let’s move forward”, with the participation of artists both national and foreign of Latin America.

The Russian pavilion was built in 1914 by architect Alexei Shchusev, and since then, works by more than 800 Soviet and Russian artists have been presented there.

The Venice Biennale was founded in 1895 and is one of the most famous art forums, an international art exhibition held every two years with the participation of an international jury.

This year the Venice Biennale will be held from April 20 to November 24.
