Spring is just around the corner, and with spring comes warmer weather. Russia’s missile and drone attacks against electricity supplies and thermal power plants will not be felt as unbearable.
The warm weather also brings mud to the battlefield, and before too long it will probably become significantly more challenging for the Russian army to move in Ukraine. This will probably prevent a wave of Russian attacks along the front lines, but it will not last, writes The Economist.
The fear is that Russia will mobilize a major, new offensive, as they did last year. Ukraine’s ability to keep the Russians at bay looks worse than it did a year ago.
“Therefore, Ukraine must mobilize more troops and build more robust defenses along the front line,” writes the newspaper.

Ukraine: Russia mobilizes 100,000 soldiers
On Friday, the head of Ukraine’s land forces, Lieutenant General Oleksandr Pavlyuk, claimed that Russia is mobilizing 100,000 soldiers who could be deployed in a summer offensive.
– It does not necessarily have to be an offensive, perhaps the soldiers will only fill up for units that have been greatly reduced during the war. But it is possible that at the start of the summer we will see departments that show offensive intentions, said Pavliuk.
A few days before Pavlyuk’s remarks, Russia’s Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, said that the defense will be strengthened with two new army divisions and 30 new units by the end of the year.

Before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Ukraine produced almost no weapons. That has changed. In 2023, they tripled the production of grenades, military vehicles and missiles. According to Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Sjmyhal, production will increase further this year.

The country is still dependent on Western support, and with Joe Biden and Donald Trump arguing about whether Ukraine should receive money from the United States or not, Ukraine’s president has been harsh in his speech to Europe.
Earlier this month, Zelenskyj stated that the lack of ammunition on the front lines is humiliating for Europe. When he addressed the EU summit last week, the president clarified that it is crucial for Europe to prove that it can deliver more.
The EU has promised Ukraine one million artillery shells by the end of March, but so far they have only managed to deliver just over half
