Russia Forms Northern Group of Forces for Operations in Belgorod-Kharkov: Analysis and Updates

The residents of Russia are forming the Northern Group of Forces from elements of the Leningrad Military District to carry out operations in Belgorod-Kharkov operational management.

About report analysts at the Institute for the Study of War in their report. They are convinced that the Kremlin does not have enough forces to capture Kharkov or Sumy.

In their analysis, experts recall the Ukrainian military observer Konstantin Mashovets, who said that the attackers continue to move new military units of the 44th Army Corps (AK) in the direction of -within the Leningrad Military District (LMD) to the Northern Army Group.

On May 3, the Russians transferred the personnel and equipment of the 30th motorized rifle regiment (72nd motorized rifle division, 44th AK, LVO) and the 128th motorized rifle division respectively to the Northern Army Group. They pretend to be loading troops and equipment at railway stations in remote areas of the Kursk region for transfer to the Northern Group of Forces, until they go to their deployment sites in the Belgorod region .

According to Mashovets, units of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment were first redeployed to the Kursk railway station, and then moved further to the Belgorod region to go to assembly areas near the Kharkov region. He recalled that the residents have recently intensified air, drone and missile attacks on the northeastern border regions of Ukraine, such as Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkov regions.

However, at the same time, Mashovets repeated ISW’s preliminary assessment that the Russian Northern Army Group will not be able to conduct a successful offensive operation to capture Kharkov. The expert suggested that elements of the Russian 11th AK, 44th AK and 6th AK (all LVO) may in the future attempt to carry out limited offensive actions or carry out cross-border raids on the territory of Kharkiv and Sumy.

“Ukrainian officials are increasingly warning about the danger that a future Russian attack could capture Kharkov. However, the Russian military does not have the forces necessary to capture the city. At the same time, Russia’s offensive operations on Kharkov and Sumy will distract and divert the Defense Forces from other, more important sectors of the front,” explained the Institute for the Study of War.

The attack on Kharkov – what is known
