Russia Fires New Kinzhal Hypersonic Missile At Ukraine

State news agency RIA Novosti said it was the first use of the Kinzhal hypersonic weapon during the conflict in Western Ukraine.

“System Kinzhal . missile with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and aviation ammunition in the village of Deliatyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk region”, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Saturday (19/3/2022).

However, a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Kinzhal missile (Indonesian: Dagger) an ideal weapon that flies at 10 times the speed of sound and can escape air defense systems.

The Kinzhal missile was one of a series of new weapons that Putin unveiled in his State of the Union address in 2018.

Deliatyn is a village at the foot of the picturesque Carpathian mountains, located outside the city of Ivano-Frankivsk.

The Ivano-Frankivsk region shares a 50-kilometer border with NATO member Romania.
