Russia expresses support for China regarding Taiwan independence

Russia expressed its solidarity with the Chinese government regarding the independence of Taiwan and also rejected any attempt at foreign interference.

He trusted that the United States will not provoke provocations that aggravate the situation in the region.

And it is that yesterday, in a telephone call, the president of China, Xi Jin Ping, warned his American counterpart, Joe Biden, that “those who play with fire, will end up burning.”

We have no problem upholding the principle of China’s sovereignty, and we proceed from the fact that no irritating acts or provocations will be carried out that could aggravate this situation,” he said. Sergei Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russia.

In the conversation, Biden assured that his administration strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the the state in which or undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

“Today (July 28) I spoke with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China as part of our efforts to deepen lines of communication, responsibly manage our differences, and address issues of mutual concern,” Joe Biden noted on his Twitter account.

According to information from agencies, the presidents of the United States and China agreed to prepare a face-to-face meeting, despite the tensions over Taiwan that led the Chinese president to warn his American counterpart not to “play with fire.”

According to a US official who requested anonymity, the two leaders, who have not yet met face-to-face since Biden was elected president, agreed that their teams find the right time to do so. A date was not announced.

The two sides called the phone call – the fifth virtual meeting between the two – “frank,” a diplomatic term meaning many disagreements remain.

On the other hand, the state news agency Xinhua reported that the Chinese president warned Biden about Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory and wants to recover, if necessary by force.

“I hope the US side understands perfectly,” added Xi, whose country has been threatening “consequences” for days if the head of the United States House of RepresentativesNancy Pelosigoes ahead with his plans to travel to Taiwan.

Uncertainty about an eventual visit from Pelosi

Although high-ranking American officials frequently visit Taiwan, China considers the trip by Pelosi, one of the state’s leading personalities, to be a major provocation.

General Mark Milley, chief of staff of the United States, told the press that if Pelosi asked for “military support”, he would “do what is necessary” to ensure that it passes safely.

The tensions around this trip are only part of the problem. The United States fears that President Xi is considering the use of force to control Taiwan.

Until a while ago an invasion was considered unlikely, but observers are changing their minds and no longer rule it out.

Taiwan–Chinese

Taiwan and China separated in 1949 after a civil war that ended with the communist victory on the mainland. They have no official relationship, but are linked by billions of dollars in trade and investment. Both parties claim that they are a single country, but disagree on the form of government they can have.

On the other hand, the United States recognizes the Chinese regime since that year, according to the principle of “one China” whose capital is in Beijing. It does not officially recognize Taiwan, but supports it militarily.

China considers the island as one of its historical provinces and claims its sovereignty. It therefore opposes any initiative that gives the Taiwanese authorities international legitimacy and any official contact between Taiwan and other countries.
