Russia correspondent Iris de Graaf:
“This fits in with a trend in which Russia is taking a hard line at journalists. Until recently, this mainly affected Russian journalists, so foreign journalists were still relatively free to do their work. Vennink’s expulsion is a very unexpected step and for the foreign journalists here it comes as a shock.
In August, Russia already put BBC-journalist Sarah Rainsford from. That was in retaliation for the expulsion of three Russian journalists by the British government. It is not clear whether the expulsion of Vennink is also a reaction to a decision by the Netherlands.”
