Russia plans to completely evacuate a village as part of a lunar mission. Luna‑25, Russia’s first lunar lander since 1976, will launch from the Vostokny Cosmodrome, about 3,450 miles (5,550 km) east of Moscow.
Residents of the Shaktinsky settlement in the Khabarovsk region, southeast of the launch site, will be evacuated on the 11th of this month. The action followed a warning that rocket boosters might fall. Luna-25 will be launched aboard a Soyuz-2 Fregat booster and will be the first lander to reach the moon’s south pole, Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said.
The main objective of the mission is the development of soft landing technologies, research on the internal structure of the Moon and exploration for resources including water. Luna is expected to operate on the lunar surface for one year.
