Brussels has unilaterally destroyed relations with Moscow, so it can be considered that Russia currently has no relations with the European Union (EU), Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

He made such statements after a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Ji. Lavrov pointed out that Russia still has good relations with some EU member states, guided by their national interests. However, Moscow is open to improving relations with the EU.

“If and when Europeans decide that it is useful for them to eliminate this anomaly in their contacts with their biggest neighbor, we will of course be ready to build this relationship on the basis of equality and a search for balanced interests,” Lavrov said.

EU-Russia relations deteriorated following the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine, as well as last year’s attempt to poison Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
