“For many years, we had a ban on all medium-range missiles, the ban also applied to the deployment of medium-range missiles in Europe. This was in accordance with the INF Treaty (Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Short-Range Missiles – ed.), Agreed upon in 1987,” – said Stoltenberg.
According to the Secretary General of the Alliance, by its act Russia violated an agreement that had been in force for many years.
“Therefore, Russia’s proposal for a moratorium is not credible, because we had a ban and they violated it,” the secretary general added.
Stoltenberg also noted that from now on, the Russian Federation is obliged to destroy its SSC-8 missiles, in accordance with the INF agreement. NATO, for its part, does not intend to violate the treaty and station its nuclear weapons in Europe.
