MOSCOW – The team Russia who fought at Ukraine the south has been devastating tank Challenger 2 supplied English for the first time. This was disclosed by a Russian-backed official on Tuesday (5/9/2023), releasing what he called a video of the burning wreckage of the tank.
Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed official in the southern part of the Zaporizhzhia region which is under Moscow control, said via Telegram that a Challenger 2 tank had been set ablaze in battle near the village of Robotyne in the southeast.
He said the tank belonged to the Ukrainian army’s 82nd brigade and was meant to reach Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, but instead was destroyed in what he said was Russia’s first line of defense.
A video that Rogov posted on Telegram shows what appears to be a tank burning by the side of the road with thick gray smoke rising from it. Reuters.
Reuters could not immediately confirm Rogov’s statement.
Reported from RTThe Russian Ministry of Defense has not reported any damage to any of the British Challenger 2 tanks, as has happened to other Western armored vehicles such as the German Leopard 2 tank or the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle.
The only incident in which a Challenger 2 tank was destroyed in battle in its more than two decades of operational history was a gunfight during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
The British tank was mistakenly identified as an enemy vehicle by another Challenger 2 tank from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment outside Basra. The tank fired and one shell hit the turret, killing two crew members and destroying the vehicle.
Ukraine in March thanked Britain for what it said was a “fantastic machine” after London delivered 14 Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Kiev ahead of a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
