Russia Deploys Special Forces Brigades to Border Areas of Kursk Region

Russia has deployed units of two special forces brigades of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the RF Armed Forces to the border areas of the Kursk region. According to the Institute for the Study of War, in this way the Russian Federation is trying to consolidate part of the Ukrainian troops in the border regions and disperse them to critical sectors of the front.

Details: The Ukrainian Center for National Resistance reported on May 19 that units of the 3rd and 22nd Special Forces Guards Brigades were deployed in Tetkino, Kursk Region, Russia to prevent sabotage by Ukrainian partisans and raise the morale of Russian troops.

According to ISW, such Russian deployments in the border areas are most likely an attempt to anchor part of the Ukrainian troops in the border regions and disperse them to critical sectors of the front.

The institute noted that earlier units of the 3rd Guards Special Purpose Brigade were located in the Kremennaya Luhansk region, and units of the 22nd Guards Special Purpose Brigade were located in the Orekhov area in the west of the Zaporozhye region.

“It is not clear why the Russian leadership decided to withdraw such units from the active sectors of the front to the Russian rear areas. Probably, these units suffered losses in recent hostilities and were withdrawn and redeployed for rest and rearmament. The deployment of these units in the border areas is unlikely to have desired informational or operational effect,” the ISW noted.
