Russia Deploys 104th Airborne Division to Ukraine: UK Ministry of Defense Report

Russia has begun deploying a newly formed division of paratroopers in the part of the Kherson region controlled by its forces, according to the latest report by the UK Ministry of Defense, a summary of which was published on the X social network.

British intelligence suggests Russia has begun deploying the army’s newly formed 104th Airborne Division to Ukraine for the first time. This is happening in the Kherson region.

Plans to restore this unit, which has been reduced to a brigade since 1998, were announced in August 2023 by the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu. Analysts say subordinate units of the 104th most likely include the 337th Regiment and the 52nd Artillery Brigade.

Intelligence also suggests that the level of training of the fighters of the reconstituted 104th division is insufficient and below the standards for paratroopers considered “elite”. It will most likely be closely watched by the commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, Colonel General Mikhail Teplinski, who in October he was appointed head of the “Dnepr” troop group.
