Russia denies Reuters report on Ukraine ceasefire proposal – 2024-02-16 08:31:20

The Kremlin today rejected a Reuters cable that Russian President Vladimir Putin had suggested to USA ceasefire in Ukraine through mediators.

Asked whether a Reuters report that Russia had made peace proposals was true, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “No, it’s not true».

The Russian president sent messages to Washington in 2023 publicly and privately through proxies, such as Moscow’s Arab partners in the Middle East, that he was ready to consider a ceasefire in Ukraine, Russian sources told Reuters.

Mediators met in Turkey in late 2023, according to three Russian sources, and White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan called Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Gurry Usakov, in January.

Diplomatic arrangement

“We remain open to a political and diplomatic settlement that will be based on consideration of our legitimate interests, that will be based on consideration of the realities that have developed over many years and that have now led to the current situation,” said Wednesday (2/14) Sergey Lavrovspeaking in the State Duma.

“However, in the absence of serious proposals from those who declared war on us and (considering) their reluctance to appreciate either our interests or the realities on the ground, it is not yet possible to sit at the negotiating table. Such options are not visible,” Lavrov added.

Referring to the developments on the Ukrainian front, Lavrov emphasized that the West is no longer talking about its own victory, but about how it will not “let Putin win”. “Washington and its allies do not give up their dreams of inflicting a strategic defeat on us. However, seeing the successful actions of the Russian army in Ukraine, the West is no longer talking about its own victory, but about how not to let Putin win,” said the Russian minister.

Subsequently, the Russian foreign minister spoke about the failed, as he described, attempts by the West to isolate his country. “In the context of growing mutual understanding with the countries of the East and the South, it seems logical that the West’s plans to isolate Russia have failed,” he said, adding that “the supporters of anti-Russian initiatives themselves are forced to admit this, although they are clear that they will continue to put pressure on us and our allies, using for this not only the Kiev regime, but also a wide arsenal of tools of hybrid warfare in the economy, finance, information space, culture, sports – all we see these every day”.
