JOHANNESBURG – Western countries have no chance to join forces BRICS so long as they pursue a hostile policy towards their members. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Ryabkov.

Speaking at a press conference after the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ryabkov recalled that one of the main conditions for joining the group was not imposing illegal sanctions on any of the association’s members.

He noted that the six countries invited to join the BRICS at the meeting – Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – fully comply with these requirements.

“Meanwhile, Western countries are following the opposite direction, so there is no hesitation in inviting anyone from this group not only to join the BRICS, but even to participate in its events,” Ryabkov stressed. Russia TodaySaturday (26/8/2023)

He also vowed to stick to this line. Even so, it will not completely close the doors of BRICS membership for Western countries.

“If any country supporting the sanctions regime violates regulations despite strict discipline on the part of the West and abandons this policy, its membership application may be processed,” said the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister.

Western countries have imposed tough economic sanctions on BRICS member Russia over the Ukraine conflict. Moscow has repeatedly denounced this punitive measure as “illegal.”

Moreover, in 2021, the European Union imposed restrictions on China – which is also a member of the BRICS – by sanctioning several officials over alleged human rights violations that Beijing has always denied.
