Gazprom has decided to preserve the project
Russia will seal and preserve the gas pipelines “Nord Stream 1” and “Nord Stream 2”, damaged by an explosion at the end of September, Reuters reported, citing its sources, writes Trud bg.
Gazprom has already stated that it has the technical possibility to repair the pipelines. However, two Reuters sources familiar with the plans have revealed that Moscow does not see much prospect of improving relations with the West in the foreseeable future so as to restart gas transfers to Europe.
One of the agency’s sources stated that Russia “buried” the project. However, according to two others, there are no plans yet to repair the pipelines, but they will be preserved for possible reopening in the future.
If liquefied natural gas from the United States, which Europe partially replaces Russian fuel with, rises significantly in price, perhaps European countries will be ready to resume purchases of large quantities from Russia.
In the process of conservation, the ends of the pipes ruptured in the explosions will be sealed and sealed. They will be given a special coating to prevent further corrosion from seawater.
Russia called on the UN Security Council to help conduct an independent investigation into the explosions.
“For Russia, the explosions of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines are an act of international terrorism,” said the permanent representative of the Russian Federation, Vasily Nebenzia, at a meeting of the Security Council at the end of February.
“As many of you remember, even then (in September of last year) it was basically clear who could be behind this act of international terrorism. For us, this is exactly what happened,” Nebenzya pointed out.
