Russia cuts off electricity supplies to Ukraine – 2024-08-15 14:59:25

/ world today news/ Kiev will have to light itself on its own, as Russia is ending commercial electricity supplies to Ukraine, Kommersant reported on Tuesday (January 12). The contract between the two countries expired in 2015 and will not be renewed.

“The Russian Federation is not conducting negotiations on the supply of electricity to Ukraine,” confirmed the Ministry of Energy in Moscow. “The contract will not be extended, as it was initially tied to the supply of electricity from Ukraine to Crimea,” the department explains.

Since 2014, Kyiv has been buying electricity from the Russian energy system based on a contract between Inter RAO and Ukrinterenergo, which remained in force until the end of last year. At the same time, a contract was concluded for the supply of Crimea from Ukraine. Formally, it was not related to the export contract between Kyiv and Moscow.

The problems with Ukraine’s electricity supply have already manifested themselves in Genichesk, where a week ago the heating was stopped and Russia’s rescue intervention was necessary. It is possible that in the event of prolonged cold weather or interruption of coal supplies, the country will switch to electricity mode.
