Russia Criticizes USA’s Veto on UN Resolution for ‘Humanitarian Pause’ in Hamas-Israel Conflict

Moscow

Government Russia criticized the veto given United States of America (USA) for Security Council resolutions United Nations (UN) which regulates the ‘humanitarian pause’ in war Hamas oppose Israel so that help can come in Gaza Strip. Moscow said the veto would trigger ‘dire consequences’.

As reported AFP, Friday (20/10/2023), 12 of the 15 members of the UN Security Council approved the resolution drafted and proposed by Brazil in a vote on Wednesday (18/10) local time. The resolution also condemned ‘heinous terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas’.

The US was the only UNSC member to reject the resolution. However, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the US rejection was considered a veto that thwarted the resolution.

“In the context of a deepening impasse that risks spreading beyond the borders of the Middle East region, and taking on a confessional dimension, the consequences of this step are dire,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

According to Moscow, it was disappointing that a resolution that could have contributed to ‘stopping the escalation of tensions and reducing violence against civilians’ could not be adopted by the UN Security Council.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the US veto ‘clearly demonstrated Washington’s true aspirations for the region’.

“Every day of delay means not only a rapid increase in the number of dead and injured, but also the continued suffering of civilians held captive in the blockaded enclave (Gaza Strip-ed),” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
