Russia. Corruption in the army: jump on another general

by Enrico Oliari

As part of the fight against corruption in the army, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation today opened a criminal case against the former head of the communications department of the Armed Forces, Major General Alexander Ogloblin. According to the allegations, the senior official pocketed a bribe that the investigators described as “very high”, about 10 million rubles, received for the defense contract for telephone systems. At the request of the investigators, the military court ordered Ogloblin to be kept in prison.
In May, Russian President Vladimir Putin replaced Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu with civilian Andrei Belousov, as several episodes of corruption emerged under his 12-year mandate. Shoigu was appointed secretary of the Security Committee to replace Nikolai Patrushev, who had been an assistant to the President of the Russian Federation for shipbuilding.
The fact is that Belousov seems to have started a season of hunting for corrupt, and in September Major General Valery Muminjanov, deputy commander of the Leningrad Military District for logistics and technical support, was arrested, under accused of taking a bribe of 20 million rubles. for a uniform contract; in July former deputy defense minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Bulgakov ended up behind bars; another prominent figure whose wrists were hand-glued, again due to a history of bribes, was Timur Ivanov, Sergey Shoigu’s Deputy Minister of Defense for several years; in May, General Vadim Shamarin, who was the head of the Central Communications Group of the Armed Forces, was arrested, also in this case for bribes; the same for the head of the Personnel Department of the Ministry of Defense Yuri Kuznetsov, while the former commander of the 58th Army Ivan Popov was found to be involved in the theft of laminates worth 130 million rubles.
