MOSCOW (dpa-AFX) – According to the authorities in Moscow, the two corona vaccines previously approved by Russia also protect against the more contagious virus variant from Great Britain. A comparative study showed that the antibodies that are formed after a vaccination with Sputnik V and EpiVacCorona also protect against the British variant, the consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor announced on Tuesday in Moscow. It was not tested whether the two Russian vaccines also protect against the Corona variant from South Africa.
The British mutation with the name B.1.1.7 had emerged late last year. It is also spreading in Germany. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin writes about this variant on the Internet: “So far there are no indications of a reduced effectiveness of the vaccines.” According to experts, some vaccines work less well against the South African variant.
Sputnik V has been on the Russian market for a good six months and, according to Moscow, is now used in more than 15 countries. On the other hand, EpiVacCorona will not be used in Russia until March, according to earlier information./cht/DP/fba
