NEW YORK — Russia convenes the UN Security Council over the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in the lower reaches of the Dnipro River.
The Russian envoy to the UN in New York has confirmed this, according to Russian media. Ukraine also wants the UN Security Council to address the serious damage to the dam.
Moscow says Ukraine caused the devastation because the dam links the northern and southern banks of the river, which are owned by Ukraine and Russia respectively. According to the Kremlin, Ukraine wants to free up troops there to send to the front elsewhere. Ukraine claims that Russia itself destroyed the dam.
As a member, Russia can convene the Security Council. The council has fifteen members, including five permanent members with veto power. The five are China, France, Great Britain, Russia and the United States. Ten members are members for a few years and are elected by the General Assembly. It elects five new non-permanent members on Tuesday.
