Russia Controls 20 Percent of Ukraine’s Territory, Equivalent to 3 Countries Combined

KYIV, KOMPAS.com – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday (2/6/2022) said Russia had controlled about one-fifth of the country it led.

Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine include lands acquired during the invasion of Moscow, the annexed Crimean peninsula, and areas controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

“Today, about 20 percent of our territory is under colonial control,” Zelensky said in a speech to lawmakers in Luxembourg. AFP.

Russian troops are strengthening their grip on the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, and are steadily advancing towards the administrative center in fact Ukraine in the region namely Kramatorsk.

However, Russian troops withdrew from areas around the capital and in northeastern Ukraine to focus on attacks in eastern industrial areas.

Zelensky added that in 2014 Kremlin-backed separatists and the Russian military controlled 43,000 square kilometers, an area he equates to the size of the Netherlands.

However, that figure–more than three months after Russian invasion— has increased to nearly 125,000 square kilometers, an area Zelensky says is much larger than the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg combined.

He also told lawmakers that twice the area or nearly 300,000 square kilometers was tainted with mines and unexploded ordnance.

“Twelve million Ukrainians have fled and more than five million have gone abroad,” added the Ukrainian president, referring to the impact of the Russian invasion.
