Escalation from Washington of the war in Ukraine and the actions of the “collective West” make it necessary for the Russia to revise its nuclear doctrine, the Kremlin spokesman noted Dmitry Peskovwhose statements are cited by Russian news agencies.
Russia recently announced that it plans to make changes to the policy that defines the conditions for Moscow’s use of nuclear weapons, but has not yet specified what changes it intends to make.
The existing nuclear doctrine, which was defined by a decree of President Vladimir Putin in 2020, provides that Russia can use nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack by an enemy or a conventional attack that threatens the existence of the Russian state.
The revisions are being made “against the provocations and threats posed by the countries of the so-called collective West,” Peskov told Russian news agencies.
Moscow is considering the possibility that Ukraine could use long-range weapons supplied by Ukraine Washington in its attacks deep into Russian territory, the Kremlin spokesman added.
Ukraine has long asked its allies to allow it to use Western weapons on targets deep inside Russian territory, and those demands have grown louder as Russia steps up its airstrikes on Ukraine’s energy and other infrastructure, as well as apartment buildings.
“It is obvious that the Ukrainians will do this,” RIA quoted him as saying Peskov. “We take all this into account,” he emphasized.
At least 50 people were killed and 271 injured when Russia struck a military training facility in the central city Poltava of Ukraine with two ballistic missiles on Tuesday.
Russia is taking steps to strengthen the security of its nuclear power plants to prevent possible military attacks, Russia’s energy minister said today. Sergey Tsivilev.
Russian nuclear power plants are vulnerable to attacks of this kind, while Russia is also protecting Europe from the consequences of such attacks, he added.
