Russia has successfully conducted a simulation of its capabilities to launch a massive retaliatory nuclear strike on land, air and water, the Kremlin said, quoted by Reuters.
“Ballistic and cruise missiles were fired during the exercise,” the statement said.
Russian state television showed how Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin about the exercise, BTA reported.
The same Kremlin statement said a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was fired from a Russian test site in the Far East, a ballistic missile was fired from a nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea, and Tu-95 MS strategic bombers fired cruise missiles.
The exercise comes as Russia is embroiled in what it says is an existential standoff with the West over the war in Ukraine, and as it withdraws its ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) to strike a balance with the US, which is signed but never ratified the document.
