Russia Condemns Israel’s Airstrike in Syria: Risk of Broader Regional Conflict

Moscow

Government Russia condemned the airstrike Israel who are increasingly frequenting the region Syria some time ago. Moscow views such attacks as risking an expansion of the war between Israel and Hamas into broader regional conflicts.

As reported AFPWednesday (1/11/2023), this criticism was conveyed by the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov held a telephone conversation with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad on Tuesday (31/10) local time.

In the telephone conversation, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov emphasized Moscow’s rejection of Israel’s attacks on Syrian territory. He also warned against any action that could lead to an escalation of the ‘current explosive situation’.

“The spread of armed escalation to Syria and other countries in the region is not allowed,” Lavrov stressed in a telephone conversation with the Syrian Foreign Minister, as stated in a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Israeli military said it carried out a series of air strikes against military targets in Syrian territory in recent weeks.

“In this regard, he (Lavorv-ed) emphasized that Israeli air strikes on Syrian territory, which are increasingly occurring in line with events in the Gaza Strip, are unacceptable,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Fears of a wider regional conflict increased after Hamas invaded southern Israel on October 7, reportedly killing more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. More than 240 hostages, according to Israeli officials, were taken to the Gaza Strip.
