Moscow, Nov 24 (EFE).- Russia has already chosen its new ambassador in Washington, Alexandr Darchiev, a 64-year-old veteran diplomat who headed the Russian legation in Canada and who since 2021 has headed the North American department in the Ministry. of Foreign Affairs, as reported today by the Kommersant newspaper.
Darchiev, who has worked in Foreign Affairs since 1992 and was ambassador to Canada from 2014 to 2021, has worked or studied for many years in the United States, which is why he is considered one of the greatest specialists in North American affairs in this country.
The Kremlin had already said it would not lower the level of Russian representation despite deteriorating relations with the White House due to its support for Ukraine.
Darchiev will take office at a time of enormous tension between Moscow and Washington, although with the return of Donald Trump to the Presidency, contacts between the White House and the Kremlin are expected to resume.
Analysts predict that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump will meet next year, as they did in mid-2018 in Helsinki, with settling the conflict in Ukraine on the agenda.
The previous ambassador, Anatoly Antonov, returned to Moscow less than a month before the presidential elections in the United States after seven years in the position.
«He successfully fulfilled his mission. Now it’s someone else’s turn,” explained Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin’s adviser on international affairs.
He stressed that Antonov carried out his work “in difficult conditions, when relations (with the US) are practically at a standstill.”
«He worked without having permanent contacts with representatives of the US administration. “His work was complicated,” he said.
Antonov, 69 years old and a specialist in security and disarmament, was sanctioned by the West for his support of the Russian military campaign in Ukraine.
In 2021 he was called for consultations by the Russian Government amid a drastic increase in tensions with Washington following accusations by US intelligence of Russian interference in the 2020 presidential elections.
Age is not a problem to continue holding high positions of responsibility in Russia, since the president recently extended the terms of septuagenarians such as the president of the Senate, Valentina Matviyenko, and the head of the Investigative Committee, Alexandr Bastrikin. EFE
