Russia carried out a new series of airstrikes against Ukraine yesterday, setting fire to several buildings in the hometown of the president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and seriously injuring a 64-year-old woman, Ukrainian authorities said, quoted by Reuters.
Over the past month, Moscow has stepped up its campaign of attacks with long-range weapons. During the winter, they focused on Ukrainian energy infrastructure with weekly strikes, but now the attacks are becoming more frequent and often take place at night.
“Several explosions rocked the city of Kryvyi Rih (in central Ukraine). The enemy hit a private industrial enterprise. Several buildings were set on fire at the same time,” the presidential office said in a statement.
That night air raid sirens sounded in the capital and across much of the country. In Kiev, the night sky was lit up as air defenses tried to detect drones.
The Ukrainian armed forces said they were able to shoot down three of the six cruise missiles and 16 of the 22 drones.
Details of the damage caused were not released by Ukrainian authorities, except for damage in the steel-mining town of Kryvyi Rih, where Zelensky was born. “A 64-year-old woman was seriously injured. She was taken to hospital,” the presidential office announced. “The enemy attack caused a fire in the administrative building. The fire disaster has been extinguished,” she added. A 45-year-old man was slightly injured, BTA reported.
