On the night of Saturday and Sunday, Russia carried out the “most massive” drone attack against Kiev since the beginning of the invasion, Ukraine’s military authorities said.
Forty of the 54 drones launched were aimed at the capital, killing two people and injuring three.
“In total, a record number of launched explosive drones was counted: 54!”, the Air Force of Ukraine announced in Telegram, quoted by AFP.
“This is the most massive drone attack on the capital since the beginning of the invasion” in February 2022, the regional military administration said on Telegram.
The attack took place in several waves and the air raid alert lasted for more than five hours.
“According to preliminary data, more than 40 Russian drones have been destroyed by air defense systems” over Kiev, the administration added.
“Following the destruction of the drones, debris fell on a seven-story building in the capital’s Golosievsky district, killing one person and injuring another. A fire broke out in a warehouse area, with flames rising 1,000 meters into the sky and also killing one person,” the administration announced.
“Emergency services are everywhere,” regional authorities said.
“A 41-year-old man died in the Solomian district, and a 35-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized,” Kyiv mayor Vitaly Klitschko announced.
It is Russia’s 14th drone attack on the Ukrainian capital this month, authorities said.
The 54 attack drones were launched “from the Bryansk and Krasnodar regions” in Russia, the air force said, adding that 52 were destroyed.
“Moscow has targeted military sites and critical infrastructure in the center of the country and in particular in the Kyiv region,” they said.
Russia says its air defense systems have repelled a drone attack on a refinery
Russian air defense systems have destroyed several drones that tried to attack the refinery in the city of Ilsky, Krasnodar region, Reuters reported, citing local authorities.
“Several unmanned aerial vehicles tried to approach the territory of the refinery in Ilski in Krasnodarsk. All of them were neutralized. No one was injured,” the regional operational headquarters reported in Telegram.
The statement did not say who was behind the attack.
Reuters news agency notes that it could not confirm the information from an independent source.
Moscow said yesterday that Ukraine had struck pipeline installations deep inside Russia.
Kiev almost never publicly takes responsibility for attacks in Russia and on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, Reuters notes.
The refinery in the town of Ilski, located near the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, has a processing capacity of about 6.6 million tons per year. She has been attacked several times this month, the British agency adds.
