Russia Captures Ukrainian Village Marinka, Ukraine Responds Negatively

25 dec 2023 om 18:20

Russia reported on Monday that it had captured the completely destroyed Ukrainian village of Marinka in the east of the country. The Russian military is in control, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said. Ukraine responds negatively.

Marinka has been converted into a fortress by the Ukrainian army since 2014, when the conflict with Moscow-backed pro-Russian rebels broke out. According to the Russians, “the liberation” of the village reduces the “defensive capabilities” of the Ukrainian army.

The Ukrainian army denied on Monday that the Russians are in control of Marinka. Ukrainian soldiers are said to still be present.

Shoigu claimed the conquest in a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin stated that the capture of Marinka will remove Ukrainian troops from Donetsk, the city under Russian control and which has been regularly attacked by the Ukrainians since 2014. “That makes it possible today to defend Donetsk more efficiently against the attacks,” Shoigu added.

Since the failure of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, Russian troops have regained the initiative at the front and are making territorial gains. They are also trying to encircle another stronghold near Donetsk, Avdiivka.
