Russia calls for pressure on Kiev ahead of Biden-Zelensky’s meeting

Russia on Tuesday called on the United States to step up pressure on Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky before his scheduled meeting with his ASV colleagues Joe Biden.

The United States must use its influence over Zelensky to persuade him to implement the Minsk peace agreement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

In addition Kiev the ceasefire agreement reached between Germany and France in Paris in December 2019 must also be respected, Peskov added.

The agreement reached in 2015 through France and Germany obliges Ukraine to grant extensive autonomy to the territories controlled by Russian armed militant gangs, as well as to guarantee an amnesty for all militants involved in the war against the Ukrainian army.

The agreement stipulates that Ukraine will regain control of the border with Russia only after the holding of local elections in the territories controlled by militant gangs.

These rules, which were imposed on Kiev in the face of a direct military threat from Russia, are in fact unacceptable to Ukraine, and it is therefore virtually impossible for Parliament to approve the laws necessary to implement them.

However, all of Zelensky’s attempts to obtain any amendment to the Minsk agreement have so far been unsuccessful.

Zelensky and his Ukrainian delegation arrive in Washington on Tuesday evening.

The visit is expected to be introduced by Zelensky and Defense Minister Andris Taran’s visit to the Pentagon to discuss the military situation in the east of the country, but his meeting with Biden is scheduled for Wednesday.

Kiev’s main goal is to achieve a larger supply of US armaments.

The leaders of the two countries are expected to pay close attention to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which is to connect Russia and Germany along the Baltic Sea bed.

Kiev insists that this gas pipeline is a tool in Moscow’s hands to put political pressure on Ukraine and Russia’s other neighbors.

Zelensky is then going to California to meet with the technology industry.
