MADRID, 15 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Russia considers that “foreign intervention” in the Syrian conflict is a fundamental condition for a peace agreement to be reached, as explained by the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vasili Nebenzia.
“We consider that a key precondition in the peace agreement is the cessation of foreign occupation and military activities that have not been approved by the legitimate government of the country,” Nebenzia said during an intervention before the UN Security Council. .
Another condition that should be met is respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria, a message also addressed to Turkey, with a military presence on Syrian soil in support of the rebel militias opposed to the government of President Bashar al Assad, an ally from Moscow.
The United States has also sent forces and support to the Kurdish-Arab militias that control the northeast of the country, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the main infantry in the fight against the Islamic State.
Russia also has a military presence in Syria, although it considers that in its case it is legitimized by the request in this regard from President Al Assad.
