Russia bombs residential building in Ukraine; 5 dead

A Russian-made remote-controlled bomb attack in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv hit a residential building and a playground, killing five people and wounding at least 47 others, local authorities said.

Ihor Terekhov, the city’s mayor, said on Telegram that a child died in the playground. Three people died in the 12-storey apartment block that caught fire as a result of the attack, he added.

About 20 injured people are in serious condition, according to the regional governor, Oleh Syniehubov.

One end of the block was engulfed in black smoke, with many of the upper floors ablaze. Several cars parked outside were destroyed by the fire.

Emergency services and rescue volunteers rushed survivors out of the building. The body of one victim lay under a mat on the floor, surrounded by police officers. Residents of all ages, some covered in blood, sat stunned on benches and walls outside as medics tended to their wounds.

Authorities did not provide details of the circumstances surrounding the death of the fifth person in the attacks, which affected four areas of the city.

Kharkiv has been subject to intense Russian bombardment throughout the war, although there has been a decline in intensity in recent weeks, possibly linked to an incursion by Ukrainian forces into Russia’s Kursk region.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Friday’s attack involved five guided aerial bombs dropped from planes in Russia’s Belgorod region, which are equipped with a navigation system that guides them to their targets. These weapons are difficult to intercept and have become a fearsome tool in recent months in the war in eastern Ukraine that can cause enormous devastation.
