Ukraine reported that Russia began withdrawing its troops from the country’s capital, Kyiv, to Belarus today, Friday (1/4).
“We are monitoring the movement of a large number of vehicles [Rusia],” said the Governor of Kyiv Oblast, Oleksandr Pavyluk, via Telegram, as reported by Reuters.
Pavyluk then explained, a number of troops were observed leaving Hostomel Village. However, Reuters unable to independently verify this news.
If true, this troop reduction is in line with Russia’s pledge to reduce attacks in Kyiv and Chernihiv. The promise came when Russia and Ukraine held a series of peace dialogues in Turkey this week.
Russia said they would reduce attacks in order to pave the way for diplomacy to achieve peace.
However, shortly after Russia made that promise, explosions were heard again in Kyiv.
Several parties in Ukraine then emphasized that the reduction in troops in Kyiv did not mean Russia had stopped the attack.
Overall, the movement of Russian troops in central Ukraine is indeed reported to have begun to slacken due to lack of logistics.
Currently, Russia is focusing on attacking Mariupol in eastern Ukraine. The city lies between Crimea and Donbas, two regions of Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian separatists.
