Russia begins construction of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant

“Rosatom” General Director Alexey Likhachev was present at the construction start ceremony held this week, according to a statement from “Rosatom”.

The future nuclear power plant, which will have four reactors, is located in the Mediterranean coastal city of Daba’a, about 300 kilometers north of the capital, Cairo.

The value of the project is about 25 billion euros.

Egypt considered the possibility of building a nuclear power plant as early as the 1980s, but after the Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986, the project was postponed.

In May, the Finnish energy company “Fennovoima” announced that it had terminated the contract with “Rosatom”, which planned to build a third nuclear power plant in Finland. The decision to terminate this agreement was explained by the risks posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Egypt continues economic cooperation with Russia. Cairo has avoided expressing support for either of the warring parties and has not joined the sanctions imposed on Russia.
