Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, passed a law on Wednesday banning surgical and legal gender reassignment.
Sex reassignment surgery is banned in Russia. People are also not allowed to register as a different gender. The law should protect family values.
Russian President Vladimir Putin regularly speaks out against transgender rights. The war in Ukraine is often portrayed by the Kremlin as a struggle against Western values, including an “anti-family ideology.”
At the end of last year, “gay propaganda” was banned in Russia, making it virtually impossible to spread positive messages about the LGBTQ+ community. Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the already limited freedoms of the LGBTQ+ community have been increasingly pushed back.
