Russia bans imports of Kazakhstan after BRICS accession talks

Russia’s agricultural safety watchdog has temporarily banned the import of several products from Kazakhstan. This action, which is the result of Kazakhstan’s lack of response regarding phytosanitary problemsincluding tomatoes, peppers, fresh melons, wheat, flax seeds and lentils.

Kazakhstan recently rejected a request to join BRICSbloc currently led by Russia, further straining relations. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has publicly expressed his support for the United Nations as the leading international organization and is calling for a reform of the UN Security Council that includes interests regional powers. This position contrasts with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts to portray BRICS as a representative alliance of countries challenging Western dominance and the sanctions imposed over Russia’s war in Ukraine .

Relations between Russia and Kazakhstan

While recognizing Kazakhstan’s decision, Peskov emphasizedPutin’s spokesman, emphasized the importance of their bilateral relationship and emphasized that BRICS complements the UN framework rather than replacing it.
