Washington DC –
Central Command United States of America (US) revealed that military pilots Russia had attempted to trigger a dogfight with US fighter jets flying in the region Syria. The incident indicates the latest pattern of increasingly aggressive Moscow behavior.
As reported CNNSaturday (29/4/2023), US Central Command spokesman Colonel Joe Buccino called the incident that occurred in April this latest example of the aggressive behavior of Russian pilots.
A US official who declined to be named said to CNN that the Russian pilots did not appear to have attempted to shoot them down jet tempur ASbut they allegedly attempted to ‘provoke’ the US and ‘lead us into an international incident’.
US Central Command uses the term ‘dogfight‘ when explaining about the incident between the Russian and US fighter jets in the Syrian skies. In military aviation, the term ‘dogfight’ refers to aerial combat, which often takes place at relatively close quarters.
A video released by US Central Command, dated April 2, purports to show a Russian Su-35 fighter jet carrying out an “unsafe and unprofessional” intercept of a US F-16 fighter jet.
One other video from April 18 purports to show a Russian fighter jet violating coalition airspace and flying within 2,000 feet, or about 609 meters of a US military aircraft — a distance a fighter jet can travel in seconds.
In recent years, the US and Russia have used a line of deconflict between the two countries’ militaries operating in Syria, intended to avoid accidental mistakes or interactions that unintentionally trigger escalation.
