Two missiles Russia attacked the city of Pokrovsk in East Ukraine, including in a residential building. This incident killed at least five people and injured many people.

Reported AFP Tuesday (8/8/2023), President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow had attacked “ordinary residential buildings”. Ukraine said rescue operations were underway.

“Five people died,” Interior Minister of Ukraine, Igor Klymenko, said via Telegram.

The second attack killed a top emergency official in the Donetsk region, he added. He later said the number of injured had risen to 31.

“Among them were 19 police officers, five rescuers and one child,” Klymenko said.

He added that debris was still being “cleared” and “search and rescue operations are ongoing.”

Zelensky had previously warned of “victims” in the attack, sharing videos of people clearing debris from the building.

The video shows civilians helping people lying on the floor outside buildings and ordinary cars covered in rubble. The footage also shows a second building that appears to have been heavily damaged.

The head of the Donetsk region, Pavlo Kyrylenko, said the attack damaged two “private sector residential buildings, a hotel, a catering establishment, shops and an administrative building.”

He warned of the “threat of repeated attacks” and urged residents to take cover.
