Russia asks China for food aid during war in Ukraine

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Russia requested military and financial assistance from China in the midst of conflict with Ukraine. Some of the assistance requested was military food packages that were not perishable.

As reported CNN on Monday (14/3), the request underscores the basic logistical challenges that experts have long believed are hindering Russia’s progress in Ukraine.

Previously, several sources reported that Russian troops were breaking into grocery stores in search of food during the invasion.

Thus, one source stated that food was a Russian request that China might be able to fulfill. This is believed to be because it does not become a lethal aid which is considered provocative by the West.

Previously, the US had information showing China was open to providing Russia with military and financial assistance amid a war with Ukraine.

However, it is not yet clear about the certainty of China’s assistance to Russia in any form.

Meanwhile, the US has also continuously reminded China about the potential and consequences of providing assistance to Russia, including in a 7-hour meeting between representatives of the two countries in Rome.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan meets senior Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome, Monday (14/3) local time. The meeting was said to have discussed substantial issues regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“We have deep concerns about China’s alignment with Russia,” one senior U.S. official said of the meeting.

However, State Department spokesman Ned Price on different occasions underlined that China could actually exert influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war with Ukraine.

“We have communicated very clearly to Beijing that we will not stand by,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.

“We will not allow any country to compensate Russia for its losses.”

China can do more than many other countries to put an end to this senseless violence, this brutality, to the war that Putin is planning.”
