“Apparently, we all need to ensure that these weapons are not used for non-constructive purposes,” Lavrov said at a press conference before his speech at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

Lavrov said that Russia was not aware of any talks regarding international recognition of the Taliban, noting that Moscow had not received a request from the militant group for permission to appoint an ambassador to the country.
Lavrov also noted that the interim government set up by the Taliban in Afghanistan did not properly represent all levels of Afghan society in terms of ethnic and political recognition.
He also said that Russia would support the Taliban’s “determination” to fight ISIS and other terrorist entities.

During his remarks, Lavrov also discussed the prospect of restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the nuclear deal with Iran – an agreement that was unilaterally issued by former US President Donald Trump in 2018.
Lavrov noted that the US had said during the JCPOA negotiations that it was not ready to give written assurances that the future administration would not abandon the deal.
