Russia announces gas supply to China

Russia wants to channel natural gas it previously sold to Europe to China. The planned “Power Siberia 2” pipeline will replace the Baltic Sea “Nord Stream 2” pipeline, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told Russian television channel Rossiya-1 yesterday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan, Novak said Russia will supply China with 50 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

Corresponds to the maximum capacity of “Nord Stream 1”

The contracts will be signed shortly, Nowak in Uzbekistan said. 50 billion cubic meters would roughly correspond to the maximum capacity of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline – 55 billion cubic meters. No gas has flowed through the pipeline to Europe since September.

According to Russian information, due to technical problems, which the West considers advanced. “Nord Stream 2” was not put into operation due to the Russian aggressive war against Ukraine.

Start of construction 2024

The start of work on the “Power of Siberia 2” is in 2024, Nowak said. Gas has been flowing from Yakutia to China through the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline since 2019. The Energy Minister has announced that deliveries through the pipeline will be increased to reach 20 billion cubic meters per year. Connecting the Kovitka camp near Lake Baikal next year will make everything easier.

In 2024 “Power Siberia 1” is expected to reach full capacity, when 61 billion cubic meters of gas per year will flow through the pipeline, of which 38 billion cubic meters will go to China. The Russian company Gazprom and the Chinese company CNPC had agreed on this in 2014.
