In 1960, the writer Vasily Grossman sent the manuscript of his masterpiece «Life and Destiny» to the literary magazine «Znamia». Horrified by what he had written, the editor-in-chief handed it on to the KGB. The work was immediately confiscated. For the lesson of this great book – it is more than a thousand pages – was unbearable for the Soviet power. Grossman, who had been to Stalingrad himself, explained in it that Nazism and Communism were two warring brothers who fought each other so relentlessly precisely because they essentially agreed.
