After the moments of his execution by Russian forces spread among Ukrainians over the past two days, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, denounced from Kiev the horrific scenes of the killing of a captured Ukrainian soldier.
And he stressed from Kiev, alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky, today, Wednesday, that the video clip – which spread on the Internet and shows the execution of a captured soldier, was shot after he chanted “Glory to Ukraine” – shocking.
“The shocking final scenes of a soldier apparently summarily executed are another tragic reminder of the need for strict adherence to the laws of war,” he said.
These statements came after Zelensky confirmed that he was determined to hold those involved accountable and bring them before the International Criminal Court.
The horrific video showed the prisoner standing and puffing his cigarette, apparently over a shallow hole, before one of the Russian elements addressed him threateningly, and he responded by defiantly, “Glory to Ukraine.”
The Russian ignores him with a bullet in his head, and throws a corpse into the hole, and then buries him with dirt.
However, the image of the “unknown” soldier and his cry have become an icon among Ukrainians on social media.
Later, the Ukrainian 30th Brigade announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday evening that the captured soldier was called Timofey Chadura, explaining that he disappeared on February 3 during fierce fighting near the eastern city of Bakhmut, which Russian soldiers and mercenaries had been trying to seize for weeks.
