Russia and Ukraine for the First Time in Direct Negotiations, Discuss What?

Russia and Ukraine entered into direct negotiations for the first time after the invasion which took place in nearly months. The two countries are negotiating to solve the food problem that is starving millions of people around the world.

As reported by AFP, Wednesday (13/7/2022), these negotiations were carried out in Istanbul, Turkey. The high-stakes meeting also involved UN and Turkish officials.

However, after nearly 3 hours of negotiations, Russia and Ukraine did not reach any agreement. The two countries did not get a breakthrough on the problems that occurred.

Meanwhile, Turkey’s Defense Ministry issued a statement saying talks had “ended” with no indication of whether progress had been made.

The threat of famine is indeed engulfing Africa and other poorest countries due to the fighting between the two countries. How come? The fighting is engulfing one of the world’s major grain-producing regions.

Ukrainian officials say at least five people were killed in Russian shelling in the area around the Black Sea port city of Mykolaiv.

“You never get used to war. It’s terrible and scary,” said 60-year-old Lyubov Mozhayeva in the partially devastated frontline city of Bakhmut.

Ukraine is an important exporter of wheat and grains such as barley and corn. It has also supplied nearly half of all sunflower oil traded on the global market.

But shipping across the Black Sea has been blocked by Russian warships and mines Kyiv has laid to prevent the dreaded amphibious assault.
