Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners of war on January 31, releasing about 200 people from each other. This was the first prisoner exchange since the crash of a Russian military transport plane last week.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that after negotiations with Ukraine, 195 Russian soldiers whose lives were in danger were returned to Russia from areas controlled by Ukraine to receive medical and psychological treatment. In response, 195 members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were also handed over to their country.
Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed on social media X on the same day that this was one of the largest prisoner exchanges to date, with a total of 207 people. The number of returns was slightly higher than that of Russia.

On January 24, a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane crashed in western Belgorod Oblast, killing all on board. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on board and claimed that the transport plane was shot down by a Ukrainian missile.
