KIEV, KOMPAS.TV – Russia and the United States (US) ‘one step closer to the brink of war’. This statement was made by Ukrainian political analyst Petro Burkovskiy, Friday (12/31/2021), following a telephone call between the leaders of the two countries.
Launch Associated Press, Burkovskiy stated, Russian President Vladimir Putin showed that he was ready to oppose Western sanctions regarding the deployment of Russian troops in Ukraine.
The assessment was made by Burkovskiy after a meeting between the two presidents for nearly an hour on Thursday (30/12). The meeting itself was held amid the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
On Putin, US President Joe Biden said that the two countries are now facing two different paths: diplomacy or deterrence through sanctions.

Meanwhile, Putin replied that new sanctions against Moscow could trigger a complete split between the two governments.
Russia has made it clear that it wants a written commitment that Ukraine will not be allowed to join NATO’s North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Allied military equipment should also not be placed in the area of the former Soviet states.

The Biden government has denied these requests.
