Military expert and retired US Navy captain Sadler called the incident “the first ever” such case.
Russia and China earlier this week sent a group of eleven ships to the shores of Alaska. According to The Wall Street Journal, citing American experts, it was the largest flotilla approaching American shores.
According to WSJ, the ships patrolled the Aleutian Islands and did not enter American territorial waters. The US sent four destroyers and P-8 Poseidon aircraft to monitor the flotilla.
The US command confirmed that the ships of Russia and China moved together off the coast of the United States, but did not specify where exactly they were, and the number of ships, adding that the patrol did not pose a threat.
Brent Sadler, senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation and a retired US Navy captain, called the incident “the first in history” such a case.
“Given the context of the war in Ukraine and the tensions around Taiwan, this move is highly provocative,” he added.
Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called the appearance of ships off the coast of the United States a reminder of “a new era of authoritarian aggression.”
In the spring, The New York Times, citing an analysis of Chinese scientific publications and media articles, wrote that China is carefully studying the war in Ukraine and analyzing Russia’s mistakes. As the newspaper noted, Beijing can take into account the mistakes of the Russian command in Ukraine in the event of an attack on Taiwan.
Earlier, China made a decision that from September 1 will directly affect the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
